Competency 10 is where I feel I had the most growth in. Through the courses taken, I have a better understanding of how a Superintendent works to encourage collaborative decision making and problem solving from all stakeholders. The processes and standards that are place help guide the Superintendent to better interact with the board, educators and the community. It gave me a better framework which to draw background knowledge from.
An area where I feel I will continue to on is Competency 8. There were a couple of weeks in our Finance class that I would have liked to seen a little more hands on guidance in. However, reviewing the class handouts has helped with comprehending legal codes and regulations about finance. A positive that I did take away from this domain is the district’s budget should be tied to the District Improvement Plan and the Campus budget should be tied to the Campus Improvement Plan, which shadows the DIP. I will continue working on understanding the financial piece of the Superintendent’s role.
Position Goal:
In the future, I would like to pursue the leadership role of Superintendent. In the past couple of years, I have witnessed how a Superintendent can inspire and impact educators, community and students by servant leadership. I have had the opportunity to serve students in the role of teacher, counselor, assistant principal and currently principal. Having shadowed a principal before becoming one, was the best practice and experience that would prepare me for the position. Therefore, I would like to be an Associate Superintendent of Campus Development before I became a Superintendent. This would allow me to shadow and learn from the Superintendent to ensure success.
Leadership Goal:
As a Superintendent, I hope to serve and inspire children, parents, community, and educators to be their very best. The experiences that I have had during my internship have been many, covering a broad number of topics. They have equipped me for real-world situations that a Superintendent will have to deal with. I now have resources such as materials to reference and have gained some great friendships because of having to work closely with others through my classes. It was very motivating to learn new information in education and I hope to motivate many in the same way through a Superintendent role.
